Importance of Mist Coating

Sealing Porosity:

New plaster is highly absorbent, and without proper sealing (mist coating), it can cause regular paint to dry too quickly, resulting in an uneven finish, blistering, cracking, peeling and more unforeseen problems.

Promoting Adhesion:

Mist coating improves the adhesion of subsequent paint layers, ensuring they adhere uniformly, leading to a more durable and consistent finish.

Avoiding Flaws:

By filling in the plaster’s pores a 50/50 mix of emulsion and water, mist coating helps prevent splotches, patches, or uneven absorption of subsequent layers, thereby reducing the chances of imperfections.

Steps to Mist Coating New Plaster

  1. Prepare the Surface: Ensure the plaster is dry, clean, and free from dust or debris. Sand down any rough spots or imperfections for a smooth surface.
  2. Choose the Right Primer: Opt for a primer specifically designed for new plaster. These primers are formulated to penetrate the surface effectively.
  3. Dilution Process: Dilute the primer or paint as recommended by the manufacturer. Usually, a 50/50 mix of paint/primer and water is ideal for mist coating.
  4. Application Technique: Use a paint roller or sprayer for an even application. Work methodically in small sections, ensuring uniform coverage without over-saturating the surface.
  5. Allow Drying Time: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for drying time. Typically, a day or more might be necessary for the mist coat to dry thoroughly.
  6. Inspect and Repeat if Necessary: After drying, check for any missed spots or inconsistencies. Apply an additional mist coat if needed, maintaining the same technique.
